The Danger of Unlimited Web Hosting

You may have heard and seen web hosting provider that provides web hosting service with unlimited feature. It can be unlimited disk space or unlimited bandwidth or unlimited disk space and bandwidth.

You may think that this is a God sent hosting for you. Imagine, by paying a small amount of money, you will get a web hosting with unlimited disk space and unlimited bandwidth. You can put anything on the server and get as many visitors as you can.

You may think that this kind of hosting is appropriate for MP3 store or some portal. After all, you get unlimited disk space and unlimited bandwidth.

If you are tempted to purchase such hosting, my suggestion for you is:

DON’T!

Do NOT ever purchase a web hosting with unlimited features.

Unlimited web hosting is dangerous. Dangerous if you want to use it for your business. Dangerous is you are serious in your online business. Even a fan or club website is not worthy to be placed on unlimited hosting.

By the term “unlimited” they mean that your disk space and bandwidth is based on a shared disk space and shared bandwidth. The limit is the server disk space and server bandwidth.

For example, a provider has a server with 80 GB disk space and 700 GB bandwidth. The provider than sells the hosting to 1,000 customers. Since the provider is not a real web hosting provider, he/she can not divide the disk space and bandwidth to each of the 1,000 customers. So, the provider just states that the hosting has unlimited disk space and unlimited bandwidth.

If you purchase the hosting, you, together with another 999 customers, share the 80 GB disk space and also share the 700 GB bandwidth. This means theoretically each of you will get 80Mb disk space and 700 MB bandwidths. Why theoretically? Because, if there is one person who register first and use 2 GB disk space for his files, then the rest 999 customers including you will only have 78 GB. Imagine if there are 35 customers who use 2 GB disk space each or 70 GB in total. The rest 965 customers will only get 10 GB.

The same condition also applies with unlimited bandwidth.

If somebody has a great website and get tens of thousands of visitors per day, the bandwidth will soon be taken away. When all 700 GB bandwidth is used, your website will be down.

I hope by reading this article you will understand of what unlimited hosting really is. Don’t risk yourself; get reliable hosting with limited disk space and bandwidth. If the disk space and bandwidth is not enough, you can always upgrade to higher package or change your hosting company.

If you are searching a hosting company or next time when you want to change a hosting company, ask them how much the disk space and bandwidth limitation. If they said unlimited, just run. Your money is more worthy than those “unlimited” hosting.
